FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE STATE CO. OF             GEOLOGICAL SURVEY AND MINING

(GEOSURV-IRAQ) 

          GEOSURV is looking forward to enhance its position and develop its constitution in order to enable better and more effective participation in the rebuilding of Iraq . This can be achieved by the development of its standards of work and tasks as a pioneer Iraqi scientific center in applied geological research that can provide services to all sectors of Iraqi society . This ambition considers the present political and economic developments in Iraq , which are expected to transfer its economic structure into a free and open market economy , accompanied by larger role for the Iraqi provinces and governorates in the exploitation of their mineral resources granted by the new constitution of Iraq . The scientific and technological development in the Earth sciences fields , especially in geological mapping and mineral exploration are additional factors for GEOSURV to upgrade its standards and procedures of work .

          GEOSURV has a future vision in being the first and pioneer reference for the federal government of Iraq in various fields and applications of Earth sciences for its high standards and remarkable precision of work meeting the demands of development of  Iraq and Iraqi society . To achieve and to realize this vision , GEOSURV has put strategic aims to make precise geological information available and to provide high quality consultation for ever developing Iraq . These aims can be summarized as follows :-

· To encourage the private sector to invest in mineral exploitation and mining industry · To make amendments in the Iraqi constitution in order to include mineral resources as an important natural wealth and to work on issuing legislation to organize the geological activities and mineral exploitation in the country  in any way that serves future goals of Iraq .

·To adapt high technologies in the storage and manipulation of data in order to maintain and keep the huge and highly valuable national wealth  of information acquired by GEOSURV and to facilitate its manipulation to ensure the largest benefits for the society and its economic activities . To achieve this target a National Project was established to digitize all geological information available in GEOSURV using GIS and to create the data bases necessary for a National network of geological information on a web site .    

        GEOSURV believes in the new policy of the Iraqi government to reduce the state monopoly of the mineral exploration and mining industry in Iraq . In this respect GEOSURV is working towards transferring most of its mining sites into share-holding companies exploited mainly by the private sector .

    Rebuilding of GEOSURV scientifically and technically to meet future demands by -Training of its staff in scientifically advanced institutes outside Iraq .

-Providing new instruments for the geochemical and geological laboratories .

-Providing new drilling rigs , field instruments and field equipments .
